Thank you and farewell.

Today, we announce the closure of RCKTSHP.com, effective Wednesday March 9th, 2016.

RCKTSHP began in the summer of 2014. It was born out of the Uppercut internship program, and launched as a crowd-funding website trying to tackle the gigantic student debt problem (Chart: $17 Trillion In Student Debt By 2030). We ran scholarships and attracted talented students from across the country to sign up. We helped with a few campaigns to get successfully campaigns funded, however not enough. So we pivoted and tried tackling another student problem; high youth unemployment (Global Youth Unemployment Hits 35 Million, Recent Grads Lean On Parents).

We thought, why not a way to hire students on small projects? Students could earn a relevant work experience and develop their reputation online thru good ratings and reviews. Projects could come from employers who had small projects they needed help with.

Our freelancer project marketplace launched June 2015. We assembled a team of the best local university students who became our team for marketing, design and web development. Together, we built something that got attention from thousands of students, hundreds of employers across the country, as well as investment from 3 of the best angel investors around.

RCKTSHP aimed to be a helpful resource for business to get online and grow. Did you know? More than half of small business don’t have a website. We put together a library of tutorials and complete guides to help get small business online. Our online marketplace offered business owners a way to find and hire local, affordable help through thousands of skilled freelancers registered with us, across Canada.

It has been a wild ride; we were lucky enough to win the 2015 Calgary edition of Fundica.com’s Funding Road Show pitch competition. You may have seen us at the Chamber of Commerce, or at Startup Events or the Universities. We literally talked with thousands of you. While we take pride in having created a high utility platform used by thousands monthly, unfortunately, the volume of users and paid projects we were able to generate fell well short of what is required to operate our business.

So we are making a prudent business decision to turn RCKTSHP off.

What this means for site users:

  • RCKTSHP.com will cease to exist as of Wednesday, March 9th, 2016
  • Please collect any profile data for your records before March 9th
  • All in-development projects will have funds returned to the Employer to pay the Freelancer upon project completion, independently of RCKTSHP

Thank you to everyone who supported this project along the way; our customers, small business owners and the startup community, students and talented freelancers, mentors and our investors.
